Organic E-liquid – What Exactly Are the Benefits?
An overwhelming majority of current vapers are ex-smokers who obviously feel that vaping is a better alternative to cigarettes. This sentiment is shared through countless testimonials on grassroots outlets like vape forums and social media. As interest in organic e-juice soars, now hovering at 120,000 online searches per year, it’s clear that vapers do take their health seriously. Let’s review some of the top reasons to continue upgrading… to organic e-liquid.
- No chemical additives
Our industry has been rocked by major diacetyl scares, and to a lesser extent the substitute additive acetyl propionyl. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), diacetyl was a prominent chemical, used for butter flavoring, in the flavoring and microwave popcorn production plants where workers developed bronchiolitis obliterans, or “popcorn lung,” a severe lung disease. According to NIOSH, the application of heat in the production process exacerbated the effect of these chemicals on the workers. Toxicology studies referenced by NIOSH have shown that vapor from heated butter flavorings can cause damage to airways in animals.

It is true that flawed studies have exaggerated the threat of chemical additives such as diacetyl and acetyl propionyl as specific to e-cigarettes; these chemicals are actually present in analog cigarettes in quantities estimated to be 750 and ten times greater, respectively. Nonetheless, these additives are completely unnecessary; anyone who quit smoking for a healthier lifestyle should be aware that synthetic chemicals like diacetyl and acetyl propiony, among others, are never added to certified organic e-liquids.
Propylene glycol (PG) is a synthetic liquid substance derived from petroleum, and is the main ingredient in most e-liquids, used as a base for e-liquids, as well as a carrier for the flavorings and often for nicotine, too. There is a rising vape trend away from PG for various reasons; More and more vapers have discovered sensitivities or outright allergic reactions to PG with prolonged use, while others experience a negative reaction the first time. The latter scenario is especially dangerous; established vapers who begin to develop symptoms are most likely aware to try a 100% VG e-liquid or lower their nicotine level… but someone who has just tried vaping for the first time and experiences a negative reaction to PG may be turned off from vaping all together and continue to smoke cigarettes.

Reported symptoms include sinus irritation, sore throat, nausea, bronchoconstriction (constriction of the airways in the lungs, resulting in coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath), swollen lymph nodes, diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, fatigue, hives, and even sore muscles. While there are quite a few 100% VG e-liquids, this refers only to the base and PG can sneak in through the flavorings or nicotine. Look for PG-free e-liquids, or remove any mystery with USDA-certified organic e-liquid, which does not contain this synthetic chemical.

Through third party oversight by an organic certifying agency, the integrity of the final USDA-organic product is guaranteed to be in full compliance with federal organic regulations. This monitoring includes, but goes beyond, ingredients, to the manufacturing facility, production process in accordance with established good manufacturing practices (GMPs), and level of accountability required.
How does organic certification affect the manufacturing process?
